The Federal Government announced a relief package for Australians to complete short courses in targeted areas while at home. While a great idea, many of us have not studied for many years, particularly women, so how can you get back to study and be confident that you can succeed?
First of all lets have a look at who this is targeting and what courses are being promoted. The government is specifically aiming their package at domestic students and those who have lost work or want to re-skill. Instead of watching the entirety of Netflix, Disney+, Stan and YouTube (which honestly, I'm getting sick of, aren't you?) you can up-skill in nursing, teaching, health, IT or Science.
Which course should you choose? This is such a hard decision to make, so when I had to do this a while ago I wrote a list of activities I enjoyed, anything and everything from talking, to sport, to sewing.
Then head to 100JobsoftheFuture website. Using your list either take the quiz or head straight to the jobs. These jobs are what research has shown that the jobs of the future are likely to be. Hopefully, there are some jobs the government is targeting that you're interested in.
Next step is to find a course. The universities, TAFE's and other training providers will be busy setting the new short courses up and we will shortly see these in ads soon. I'd suggest you pick a course that leads to a career that is most interesting to you. Or just pick something that sounds fun to do. I'll write another post when they start being advertised to help you sift through them all.
Now that you have chosen a potential new career and a course, how do you get back to studying? A device of some description (iPad, Laptop or Tablet) and somewhere in the house to study is all you need. I started at the kitchen table and over 18 months have made myself a little study nook. It's tiny but I only need the desk really. The extra monitor just makes it easy to read while I write. Or get distracted by YouTube. Which helps me study, most of the time.
