Our lives have changed beyond what anyone could have imagined and using the phrases ‘should have’, ‘could have’ or ‘would have’, will only highlight what you have missed out on. Now is the time to focus on what we do have, and what we can enjoy.
I have been enjoying my breakfast outside each morning, and also for coffee or tea breaks numerous times a day (yes I have a caffeine addiction, have you seen my Insta??). However, this morning as I headed out to enjoy my back yard it started to rain. Luckily I had time to get the clothes off the life before it started pouring. But as I type this I can hear thunder as well as rain on the roof. I’d like to say “I should be out there having my coffee” but instead I’m saying “My garden is going to love this rain, let me take all my pot plants out there too”.
It has taken me a long time to get to change my thoughts from what I would rather be doing. Or thinking of what I should be doing. Or considering what would or could have happened. I have learnt through numerous CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) courses that this type of thinking ruins the present. It so insidious in some of us, that it ruins all the good things that happen in our lives.
Shutdowns due to Covid19 has affected what should have been a really good year for me.
See what I did just there? I used ‘should have’ and it turned my statement negative. Due to Covid19 many things have changed for me. I didn’t go on my planned (and booked) overseas trip, the education conferences at which I was to present were cancelled, my in-person workshops were postponed and my income has dropped.
However, I have had the opportunity to make new friends online as we have changed the way we connect. I have had the time to learn about websites and set up my own with only a small amount of help. I’ve spent many quality hours with my children and pets. And most importantly, life has slowed down for me, which I have appreciated more than I realised.
If you are struggling with the change that Covid19 has made in your life, start looking for the good things. I learnt this by finding the little things first. Sunsets are always something I enjoy every evening, as the colours are always fabulous.
